Meet Melissa (She/Her)
Sylva, NC is my hometown and I have found my community here! I’m so thankful to be working in the community I love so much! I live with my partner and our two children. Together, we raise a cat, dog, and a flock of chickens!
In my spare time, outside of work, I enjoy board games, RPGs, and video games! I play MTG Commander, Dungeons & Dragons, Pokémon TCG. Animal Crossing New Horizons and Zelda (Tears of the Kingdom) are my top fav Switch games! I very much enjoy nature. WNC has beautiful hikes and waterfalls! I also love to travel, road trips are my jam! I also enjoy community activities with my family. I enjoy creating things through art, writing, photography, crafting, sewing, gardening, etc. I’m an avid baker and love to be in the kitchen!
I believe that my own experiences with mental health and reconnecting the mind and body have helped me to grow and help others. Shared experience, connection, and education helps me to connect with my clients.
I graduated from WCU with a Masters of Social Work in 2020. Since then, I have supported children and adolescents and their caregivers. The Covid-19 pandemic unlocked so much fear, anxiety, depression, and overall just changes that we didn’t know were within us as human beings. Sometimes, rediscovering ourselves is challenging - whether that’s because of something like a pandemic, death/loss, fertility challenges, starting a new career, losing a job, starting school, changing schools, adoption, divorce, etc.. The way any of these things affects one person can be different, traumatic even, and I just hope to help others through these times, just as I have been helped through hard times myself.
I chose perinatal mental health as one of my specialties because my pregnancies have been beautiful but scary experiences in so many ways. Fertility, The pregnancy, and the “fourth trimester” are all such unique experiences and mine led me even further toward my career as a therapist. Now, in 2023, I’m continually reminded of the beautiful chaos of parenting. Which has led me to a place where I want to instill hope and strength within my community. I want to help you grow, I want to help you to improve the functionality of the systems you are connected to. Whether that’s the role of parent, child, sibling, student, partner, spouse, widow, etc.. I hope to bring light to the transition period that makes it so difficult to move into the next stage of life.
I love watching people grow. I love seeing the light on their face when they find their strengths and recognize what truly loving themself can look like! I love watching them find their place in this giant world we live in. I love watching couples learn to communicate easier, working through discomfort with them and watching relationships THRIVE! I am currently undergoing training in sex therapy! I am LGBTQIA affirming, Poly/Kink friendly and here for all of your sexual-based mental health needs!
