FAQs
How long is a session? How often?
Session length varies, however; are typically around 53 minutes. Children sometimes are unable to hold focus for this amount of time and the length of session varies. Frequency of sessions will be discussed during treatment planning, as this need varies by each individual. Often times, therapy occurs more frequently (often times, weekly) in the start of sessions as most people are dealing with difficult situations when choosing to begin therapy.
Do you prescribe medication?
No, I am not a doctor of medicine. If you want to be evaluated for psychiatric medication, either contact your primary care physician or a psychiatrist. If you are already taking medication, I can coordinate care with your doctor
Can I bring my baby to my appointment?
Yes, you are welcome to breastfeed, bottle-feed, bounce, change diapers, and care for your baby in any way they need during session. At times, we may want to work on the relationship with you and your baby so having them in session will be very helpful. Additionally, it is recommended that you also attend sessions independently at times, to have a safe space for self-care.
Do you accept Insurance?
Yes, I accept Aetna, Oscar Health, United Healthcare, Cigna, BCBS, and Oxford!
Are there problems you do NOT work with?
I do not conduct child custody evaluations or provide custody recommendations. I do not provide treatment for acute mental health disorders such as eating disorders, psychotic disorders (schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, etc.), complex trauma, or personality disorders. Due to state licensing laws, I can only provide therapy and counseling to individuals residing in North Carolina.
Do I have to stay with my child during therapy?
You do not have to remain in the session with your child. Actually, often times, it’s preferred parents allow privacy for their child during sessions. We do ask that you walk the child in and wait in the waiting area provided. If you must step out, please remain within walking distance (no more than 5 minutes) of the site for emergencies.
What can I expect in a therapy session?
Therapy is all about you and your needs. You will decide what goals you’d like to set based on what you’re feeling and needing in life at this moment. I provide a safe space to heal. The work in sessions should translate to your life outside of session, improve your self-worth and relationships, increase self-awareness and help you with the initial concerns that brought you into therapy.
What if I am embarrassed to talk about things?
Talking to a complete stranger about personal issues can feel embarrassing and that’s alright. However, many people are surprised to see how quickly they grow comfortable talking about these matters after meeting with their therapist. I won’t push you to share before you’re ready, however; this is an important step in the therapeutic process.
